These beautiful relief stone carvings are some of the most sublime works of art I have ever seen. Religious and spiritual places of Asia
This UNESCO world heritage site was built in the ninth century during the short reign of the Sailendra Dynasty. It is built in Javanese Buddhist style blending the Indonesian cult of ancestor worship and the Buddhist concept of attaining Nirvana liberation from reincarnation. The design takes the form of a step pyramid. The main structure can be divided into three components the base the body and the top. The three divisions or realms of the Mahayana Buddhist universe. These are Khamadhatu the lower spheres of human life. Rupadhatu the middle sphere of form and the Arupadhatu the high sphere of detachment from the world. The upper platform has seventy two small bell shaped stupas and one large central stupa.
